Love is Blind: Drawing & WIPs

>> Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Though part of the reason I created this blog in the first place was to have somewhere to motivate myself to draw more by posting up doodles and sketches and what-not, this particular drawing I was unable to do so because it was done as a gift. Now that the gifty-ness has taken place, I can finally share it with y'all!

Love is Blind
Granite & Tranquil, Splash of Color

Two incredibly well portrayed characters by an incredible writer: the unstoppable blind Tranquil and the bad-boy-with-a-heart Granite.

I was initially inspired to draw Tranquil because of these screenshots here; the scene Berry wrote about how Tranquil, a blind girl, experienced standing on this deck--and her determination to get into a 'real' school--totally struck a chord with me.

I knew her story was going to end up vastly different than most generations, and I was right--and in the end, Granite ended up being just as compelling to draw as her. :) I would digress into why, but... I'd really just prefer you went and read their story! Go! Go now!

A couple of people have seen these, but for those who'd like to see the process:

Some brief notes:

  • The original concept behind the drawing was Tranquil blindly reaching out to touch Granite's face, while they were standing in a darkened hallway; the drawing was going to be called 'I See You', but as I started working on it I realized that was a bit too ambitious for my current artistic ability. Whoops. XD
  • Granite's face is mostly hidden on purpose--it has to do with the 'mystery' behind the character, as well as the fact that she can't see him the way we normally would.
  • When I decided to opt for music in the background, I picked up the sheet music for "Only Hope", and chose two measures to use for the backdrop--they aren't consecutive so it'd be pointless to say which, but I like to think the song does have some meaning for them.
  • The 'circles' are meant to represent sound waves, and the paint splashes are for "Splash of Color". (Have you figured out how cheezy I am, yet?)

Anyways. I'm continually aiming to do better in my artwork, and while this wasn't a *giant* leap in the right direction, I'm still really happy with the outcome.

Cheers!

These are great!! You know me, trying to get better at my digital work. So far..I'm not that great. I've been reading up on tutorials for skin. I prefer realism over say cartoons, but I do love them both. I am not ashamed to admit that I really love anime artwork.

Anyway, what brushes/settings do you use when working with skin? I know you work in steps, but what is the initial step you take when painting skin? One thing I do is to block in shapes. Then I try to find shapes within those shapes, then I try to blend. It's the blending part that gets me. I'm not good at it..yet.

It may not have been a giant leap forward, but sweetie this picture was just plain moving. I love it and the description you gave behind it. I love it...keep doing what you’re doing...

I'm not a talented when it comes to drawing my area is more in brochures, flyers, programs and web design and my talent is in its infancy stages, but your drawing has inspired me.

Thank you Kaleeko

@Lord Charles:

Thanks! Gotta read closer--they're from the Splash of Color story, aka the Chiffon Legacy. The link to the story is right underneath the title of the artwork. :D

@Christina:

Thanks, girlie! :D

It's a bit tough to transition to working with paper to working with a tablet in a digital medium... I'm still not that great--granted, I was never that great with paper either--but the more you do it, the more you get used to it. Unfortunately, I'm not super fantastic at realism... I've done a few that are less-cartoony, but it takes a lot more time and the results are... XD Hopefully someday I'll conquer that barrier, though.

The only brushes I use are from this pack, here: http://adonihs.deviantart.com/art/My-Brush-Pack-118954791 They're really versatile for pretty much everything.

The first "step" is always working with lineart of some sort, even if I get rid of it by the end; that way I can easily select the area with the wand tool and just paste in the color. If I want to have even cleaner area selection, I use the pen tool to select an area instead.

Blending for me is pretty simple; I just create a new layer and start painting with a shadow color with a brush and eraser on low opacity, and brush/erase/brush/erase, and then mess with the hue/saturation of that layer if I don't like the shadow color I picked out.

Rut roh, uber long comment! XD Anyways, I'm definitely NO expert and my technique changes just about every drawing, but I have no problem offering what little help I can as you try to transition to computer stuff. ^^

@JaLoDe:

Awwwww!!! *flailhugsmooch* Thank you so much!! Honestly, my own talents never mean as much to me as whatever ability they may have to inspire people with greater talents to do better things. So, I'm sososo glad that it moved you!

I hope you keep feeling inspired to let your talents blossom, too, whatever they may be! Nothing makes me happier than knowing someone is ready to let themselves shine.

Cheers!

Beautiful Kaleeko, really beautiful. I love the colors you've used. And it's great to see the progress of the pic too. :)

What is this Nonsense?!

This here be a blog for the writer of Desperate Sims to talk about things not-so-story related. Real life, writing, other Simmy stuff, yada yada. If you're confused... Sorry! D;
